Research local news, genealogical information and the country’s most popular news magazines with our newest online service, NewsBank.

Anyone with a Mentor Public Library card can use NewsBank online. Visit our front page, scroll to our Digital Resources, and click on the NewsBank logo. The service offers:

  • HeritageHub, which allows you to search obituaries and death notices from 1704 through today with coverage of all 50 US states and territories. It’s especially useful for family historians and anyone interested in researching genealogy.
  • The News-Herald collection, which lets you explore more than 20 years of the local newspaper’s archives
  • America’s News Magazines, which provides access to dozens of national magazines, including The Atlantic, Smithsonian, Popular Science, and National Review.
  • The archives of dozens of Ohio newspapers including Akron-Beacon Journal, The Blade in Toledo, The Columbus Dispatch, and The Morning Journal in Lorain.

In the autumn of 1962, society teetered on the brink of catastrophe as the United States and Soviet Union faced off over missiles in Cuba. Discover just how close we came to nuclear war and how it was avoided.

In addition to being a reference librarian, Foster has a doctorate degree in history. He has taught history at both high school and college levels. Previously, he has led series on the Battles of World War IIthe Cold Warthe American RevolutionThe Vietnam Wars, and US Presidents of the 20th Century at the library.

Free 1-on-1 Help with Tutor.com

Students of all ages can receive help with their homework, writing a paper, studying for a test, or even one-on-one academic assistance with www.tutor.com and Mentor Public Library.

You only need your library card number and PIN to create a free account and receive the help you need, online and on demand at www.tutor.com/mentorpl. (This would be the same PIN that you use to log into your CLEVNET account. You can call Mentor Public Library at 440-255-8811, if you don’t know your PIN.)

Starting Feb. 1, tutors will be available to provide individualized help from 2 p.m. to midnight every day of the week.

You can also submit papers (including resumes) and math problems 24/7, and a tutor will review and assist with them.

Both English and Spanish-speaking tutors are available on more than 250 subjects including math, science, writing, reading comprehension, computer science, history, study and life skills, career and job planning, parent coaching, and test prep for the PSAT, SAT and ACT.

Tutor.com is available free to all Mentor Public Library cardholders thanks to a Libraries Accelerating Learning grant from the Ohio Department of Education.
