What’s Shaking, Shakespeare?

Kids can learn about William Shakespeare with the Fine Arts Club at 4 p.m on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at our Main Branch.

The club uses history and hands-on activities to explore different artforms – from ballet to costume design to watercolor painting – on the first Tuesday of each month. It’s open to all children from ages seven to 12. The program is free to attend. Due to limited space, registration is required. Sign up online or call us at 440-255-8811 ext. 3.

Learn about Lincoln’s Reelection

Abraham Lincoln is widely thought of as one of the nation’s best presidents. However, he nearly lost his reelection bid in 1864.

Todd Arrington, site manager at James A. Garfield National Historic Site, revisits 1864 when Lincoln hoped to win a second term. But Democratic candidate George B. McClellan didn’t make it easy, and voters were split between those who thought the Civil War needed to continue and those who wanted to make peace with the Confederacy.

This talk is part of a monthly series on the leaders and legacies of the Civil War that is hosted by the James A. Garfield National Historic Site and Mentor Public Library. Several talks in this series can be viewed online in their entirety including:

Discover the story behind Cleveland’s forgotten football champs — and what they had to do with a Hollywood starlet — during a program at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, at our Main Branch.

Local historian Dennis Sutcliffe of Lost Cleveland Memories will revisit the autumn of 1945. Glamorous movie star Jane Russell had recently moved to Cleveland to be with her husband Bob Waterfield, star quarterback of the Cleveland Rams. Explore this oft-ignored moment in the city’s history.
