Enjoy an Armchair Tour of Civil War Sites (Part 1)

Enjoy an online tour of Civil War sites from across the country that are overseen by the National Parks Service. Ranger Olivia from James A. Garfield National Historic Site will lead your tour.

She doesn’t just highlight battlefields either. You’ll also visit locations that are important to the history leading up to the Civil War and places tied to people who were important to its history.

Your stops include Natchez National Historic Park, Harriet Tubman National Historic Park, Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historic Park, Kennesaw Mountain National Historic Park, Clara Barton National Historic Site, Antietam National Battlefield, and and Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery.

The first part of the tour takes you from the war’s prologue to 1863. Join us for the second part of the tour, which we’ll host at noon on Wednesday, August 10, at our Main Branch. It will take us from 1863 to the Civil War’s conclusion!

Are sharks dangerous or just the victims of negative publicity? Discover all about these fascinating fish during a fantastic program with Kevin Magee from the Cleveland Underwater Explorers. He discusses sharks from a diver’s perspective and contrasts it with how sharks are often portrayed in pop culture. Magee also explains the natural history and biology of these ancient and awe-inspiring animals.

Mentor Library hosting trivia night for families

Rally the relatives for Family Trivia Night at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27, at our Main Branch.

Families can compete as a team to answer trivia questions. This year, the questions will be themed to go along our Summer Reading theme, Oceans of Possibilities. Teams can have up to six players, and each team must include at least one child (13 or younger) and an adult.

It’s free to play, and registration is required to join the fun. You can sign up by calling us at (440) 255-8811 ext. 3.

Summer Reading has started at all of our branches. This year’s theme is Oceans of Possibilities, so the library is hosting programs that explore and celebrate lakes, rivers, oceans and aquatic life all summer. Check out the full event calendar on our website!

All ages – kids, teens and adults – can sign up for summer reading. The more someone reads, the better chance they have of winning one of the library’s prizes at the end of the summer. The last day earn tickets for prize raffles is July 31!

Learn integrated pest management from Lake County Master Gardeners

Mark Timm from the Lake County Master Gardeners explains how to manage pernicious pests and wicked weeds by selecting the correct plants, establishing good practices (including inspection and monitoring), and applying controls to your garden. There’s not a one-size-fits-all solution or quick fix for weeds and pests. However, with strategy and diligence you can protect your garden from the worst dangers.

Our next free talk with the Lake County Master Gardeners will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, at our Main Branch. They’ll discuss how to transform your garden into a paradise for pollinators!

1. Did you know that you can get free veggie, flower, and herb seeds from our Seed Library? Check out our collection  the next time you visit our Main Branch. Borrow up to 15 packets of seeds per season.

2. By the way, any green thumbs should check out the special collection from Holden Forests & Gardens’ Corning Library available at our Main Branch. In addition to a gorgeous arboretum in Kirtland, Holden also has a spectacular collection of gardening, horticulture, environmental and botany books at Corning Library within its arboretum.

Dozens of Corning Library’s books are now available to borrow at our Main Branch. Thanks to a partnership between libraries, you can use your cards to check out books from this special collection. Our typical lending rules apply.
