Buffalo Soldiers, Bonita Canyon & President James A. Garfield

Discover the connection between the famous Buffalo Soldiers, Arizona’s Bonita Canyon, and Mentor’s own President James A. Garfield! Sharon Kennedy – an author and historian from Arizona – shares the story of the 10-foot monument in Bonita Canyon that soldiers from the 10th cavalry erected after President Garfield was assassinated in 1881.

This talk is part of a monthly series on the leaders and legacies of the Civil War that is hosted by the James A. Garfield National Historic Site and Mentor Public Library. Several talks in this series can be viewed online in their entirety including:

League of Women Voters host Candidates & Issues Forums at Mentor Libraries

Prospective voters who want to learn more about candidates and issues in Mentor, Mentor-on-the-Lake and Concord Township on the November ballot are welcome to attend a pair of Candidates & Issues forums. They are being hosted this October by The League of Women Voters of Lake County in partnership with Mentor Public Library.

The first forum will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 9, at Mentor Public Library’s Lake Branch. It will focus on candidates and issues in Mentor-on-the-Lake.

The second forum will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, at Mentor Public Library’s Main Branch. It will focus on candidates and issues in the City of Mentor, Concord Township, and Mentor Exempted Village School District.

The forums are free to attend and open to the public.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government. It never supports or opposes a political party or candidate.

All Booked Up with Cailey & Meg: Judging Books by their Covers

Cailey and Meg decided it’d be fun to color code their book choices this time! Each of their recommendations heavily features a color on its cover. Their books are:
