Free ACT Prep Sessions Available at Mentor Public Library

By |2024-01-07T13:00:45-05:00December 31, 2023|

Stressed over the test? That’s OK. We’re here to help!

We’re offering two free ACT prep sessions this January. They will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, Jan. 13 and 20. Students will learn strategies for taking the exam, try sample test questions, and complete a sample test section. The Jan. 13 session will focus on math; the Jan. 20 session will focus on the reading and verbal sections.

The sessions are free to attend. Due to limited space, registration is required. Sign up at the hyperlinks or call us at 440-255-8811 ext. 1.

The sessions will be led by John Foster, a librarian who has a doctorate degree and taught at both high school and college levels.

By the way, you can also use one of our digital services to help you prepare for your big test. LinkedIn Learning has online video courses about taking the ACT, PSAT and SAT. And it’s free to use with your Mentor Public Library card.

Winter Reading Challenges from Mentor Public Library

By |2023-12-28T10:26:10-05:00December 29, 2023|

Adults and teens can read something new and win something too with our reading challenge this winter!

First, adults and teens (seventh grade and higher) can earn raffle tickets by filling out the library’s bingo card. Get the bingo card one of three ways:

Earn a ticket for reading books and completing activities like attending a library program, reading about a president, or borrowing music, movies or audiobooks from us.

We’ll have prize drawings at the end of January and February.

Meanwhile, kids (ages 12 and younger) can build something big with our Lego Tower Reading Challenge this January and February. Every time children borrow three books — any three books — from us, they can go to the children’s desk at our Main Branch. They’ll receive two Lego bricks to add to the library’s tower. See how big it grows this winter!

Haunted Holidays

By |2023-12-13T11:40:09-05:00December 23, 2023|

Want a creepy Christmas? Families used to read ghost stories before Christmas during the Victorian Era. The most famous is Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” But there were several more.

Ranger Allison Powell from James A. Garfield National Historic Site talks about the tradition and then shares an example of the genre that was published in The Plain Dealer more than a century ago!

For more from our neighbors at James A. Garfield National Historic Site, enjoy their Civil War lecture series.
