We’re encouraging everyone to explore the parks, trails and nature preserves in and around the Mentor Headlands with our Headlands Treasures Map! (Yes, treasures — plural.)

Anyone can pick up a map from our Headlands Branch. (Don’t forget to sign up for Summer Reading while you’re there.) It specifies six natural treasures to visit this summer, including Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve, Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve, and trails in the Mentor Marsh.

Visit each park and check them off on the map. Explorers can also take a sketchbook and draw something interesting they see at each place, though it’s not required. Return the completed map to our Headlands Branch by Aug. 1 for a special prize. Everyone who completes the treasures hunt will be entered into a raffle to win a $25 gift card.

Lake County Master Gardener Amy Goletz shares the native plants that will beautify your lawns and gardens AND provide a healthy habitat for native pollinators.

(She also offers fun bee facts and a charming anecdote involving an elderberry pie.)

1. Did you know that you can get free veggie, flower, and herb seeds from our Seed Library? Check out our collection  the next time you visit our Main Branch. Borrow up to 15 packets of seeds per season.
2. You should also check out the special collection from Holden Forests & Gardens’ Corning Library available at our Main Branch. In addition to a gorgeous arboretum in Kirtland, Holden also has a spectacular collection of gardening, horticulture, environmental and botany books at Corning Library within its arboretum. Dozens of Corning Library’s books are now available to borrow at our Main Branch. Thanks to a partnership between libraries, you can use your cards to check out books from this special collection. Our typical lending rules apply.

We’re hosting an education and palate-pleasing wine tasting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, at Ferrante Winery.

For $25, be the first to exclusively sample the newest upcoming wine releases conducted in the winery’s own cellar with winemaker Nick Ferrante. The wines will be in their formative stage and starting to show the qualities imparted by the French oak barrels in which they’ve matured.

Participants must be 21 or older. You’ll also enjoy small plates and additional wine samples.

Registration is required to attend. Those interested must sign up at the Information Desk inside of our Main Branch. The $25 will be collected when registering. For information is available on our event calendar.

Learn how to spot scams and prepare for emergencies from a free program at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, at our Lake Branch.

Staff from the Lake County Council on Aging will explain how to identify dangerous scams and prepare for emergencies. They’ll also tell you what to do if you’ve already been the victim of a scam or fraud.

The program is free to attend. Due to limited space, registration is required. Sign up online or call us at 440-257-2512.

Lake County Master Gardeners will offer their expertise on how to deal with deer during a free program at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 10, at our Lake Branch.

Learn which plants deer eat and which they avoid. The gardeners will also discuss the problems of increasing deer herds and encroachment of development into natural areas. The program is open to all.
