Registered dietitian offers advice on cutting sugar from diet

By now, you know that too much sugar is unhealthy. But it’s difficult to cut sugar from the diet when it’s often lurking in supposedly healthy food.

Registered dietician and author Melanie Jatsek explains how addictive sugar is. Then she provides healthier, satisfying alternatives to the sugar-sopped foodstuffs that fill our pantries.

Jumpstart your healthy diet with help from a registered dietitian on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Mentor Library’s Main Branch.

Nearly a third of all New Year’s resolutions involve staying fit and healthy. If that’s your resolution (or if you just want to eat healthier,) we want to help.

Registered dietitian Melinda Wivell will offer advice on how to jumpstart a healthy diet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at our Main Branch. She’ll explain how to find a diet that sticks. She’ll also discuss popular diets like Keto, and talk about their effectiveness and safety. Bring your questions!

The program is free to attend but registration is required. You can sign up online or call us at (440) 255-8811 ext. 247.

By the way, we also have a registered dietitian visiting us earlier this month to discuss the sugar in our diets. Melanie Jatsek will discuss the dangers of sugar at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at our Main Branch.

Jatsek will explain how sugar is hidden in nearly all foods, the effects of sugar on the body, and just how addictive sugar is. Jatsek is also a blogger for Heinen’s grocery stores, and she’ll be joined by wellness consultants from Heinen’s.

Spa Day for teens at Mentor Library

Teens can enjoy a free Spa Day on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Mentor Public Library's Main Branch.

Teens can enjoy a free Spa Day on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Mentor Public Library’s Main Branch.

Do you know a stressed out teen? Give them an afternoon off, and tell them that they’re invited to our Spa Day at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at our Main Branch.

Teens (ages 11-18) will enjoy warm foot baths, nail polish, face masks and more in a relaxing setting. Refreshments will also be provided.

Our Spa Day is free to attend. Of course, due to limited space, registration is required. You can sign up online or call the library at (440) 255-8811 ext. 247.

Cold and flu season is upon us!

Get best practices and tips for staying healthy this winter including vaccine information from Meijer pharmacists during a program at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at our Main Branch.

Additionally, if you’re interested in more information on flu shots and vaccinations, Lake County General Health District hosts monthly immunization clinics for families, teens and adults. Learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and use hands-on tools to help incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging.
