Woodrow Wilson: The Rise of American Internationalism

Our resident historian Dr. John Foster continued his US Presidents of the 20th Century series last month with Woodrow Wilson.

We’ve filmed and shared his talk for those who couldn’t join us that night.

Nowadays, Wilson his best known for his failed attempt to launch the League of Nations after World War I. However, his platform and policies still affect both US and global politics. For example, it was his administration that pushed for the 19th Amendment, finally giving women the right to vote in this country.

So find out how Wilson went from failed lawyer to president of Princeton to president of the United States. (As a bonus, you can learn Taft’s favorite meal.)

Our series continues at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16, with a focus on Harry S. Truman. The talk is free to attend and open to all.

After a Civil War Battle: Burying the Dead

We’ve hosted years worth of programs about the different Civil War Battles. But what happens after the battle?

What happens to the dead, wounded and captured? What happens to the ruined cities and farms?

Jessica Beam, a ranger at James A. Garfield National Historic Site, discusses what happens when the battle ends during our monthly Civil War lecture.

She explains how the Union, Confederacy, doctors, chaplains, families and even towns dealt with the enormous number of dead of wounded.

Our Civil War series continues at noon on Wednesday, July 11, at our Main Branch. The topic will be the history of the Medal of Honor.

Derf Backderf on censorship, counterculture & ‘My Friend Dahmer’

John “Derf” Backderf — the graphic novelist who wrote My Friend Dahmer, Trashed and the comic strip, The City — visited us earlier this month.

Derf also allowed us to interview him. He discussed:

getting fired from his first job “for general tastelessness.”
counterculture (In Derf’s words: “I don’t know if there is a counterculture anymore, frankly… The mainstream just erased that gap because they thought they could exploit it and they did.
comics (In Derf’s words: “Right now, it’s the golden era of comics. I’m not talking about the superdude stuff. That’s boring corporate product.”)
telling the autobiographical story of going to high school with serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. (“Vigilance — if there’s a lesson at all, that would be one. Pay attention, especially the adults.”)
