All gardeners — from greenhorns to green thumbs — can enjoy a trio of three free gardening programs this April at our Main Branch.

First, Mel Hauser from Good Nature Organic Lawn Care will offer practical tips and easy steps for taking care of a lawn and landscape without using harmful chemicals and pesticides. The program will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2. All who attend will have a chance to win the book, A Beautiful Lawn Organically, written by Good Nature Organic Lawn Care’s founder Alec McClennan.

Next, the Lake County Master Gardeners will offer their expertise on how to wake up a garden this spring at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 6. This free class will provide an overview on garden cleanup, composting, pruning, fertilizing, soil testing and pest control.

Then, a Lake County Master Gardener will explain the winter-sowing technique and provide a hands-on demonstration at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 13. Dress for gardening as you’ll be planting seeds at the end of the presentation. Also, bring a clean, empty milk jug.

Due to limited space, registration is required for all three programs. Sign up at the hyperlinks above or by calling us at 440-255-8811 ext. 1.

Two more tips for any gardeners out there:

  1. Did you know that you can get free veggie, flower, and herb seeds from our Seed Library? Check out our collection  the next time you visit our Main Branch. Borrow up to 15 packets of seeds per season.
  2. You should also check out the special collection from Holden Forests & Gardens’ Corning Library available at our Main Branch. In addition to a gorgeous arboretum in Kirtland, Holden also has a spectacular collection of gardening, horticulture, environmental and botany books at Corning Library within its arboretum. Dozens of Corning Library’s books are now available to borrow at our Main Branch. Thanks to a partnership between libraries, you can use your cards to check out books from this special collection. Our typical lending rules apply.
