Dr. Roseann “Chic” Canfora shares her personal account of what occurred on May 4, 1970, at Kent State University when members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd — killing four and wounding nine.

She also provides context to that political moment, discussing the protests on other campuses and escalating rhetoric from political leaders like Ohio Governor James Rhodes. Finally, she compares 1970 to the present moment with demonstrations at universities across the country.

Dr. Canfora is the professional in residence and assistant professor in the Media & Journalism Department at KSU. She also chairs the May 4 Presidential Advisory Committee and May 4 Commemoration Committee at KSU.
