Don Billie spent years researching Margaret Hamilton: From Cleveland, Ohio, to the Land of Oz. And he uncovered a paradox underlying Hamilton and her most famous role. The Wicked Witch terrified countless kids, but Hamilton loved children.
Before becoming a fulltime actress, she taught kindergarten at Hough Elementary. She also reprised her “wicked” role twice — once on Sesame Street and then on Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.
