Host your own Halloween film festival for free. All you need is your library card.

Do you like scary movies?

You can host your own Halloween film festival with Hoopla, Kanopy and your library card. (If you’re not familiar with Hoopla and Kanopy, they’re both streaming services that you can use with your Mentor Public Library card. Think of them as Netflix — but free.)

Here are some of our favorite frightening films — any of which you can borrow and start streaming now:

If you’re looking for something funny but still Halloween-appropriate, you’ll enjoy What We Do in the Shadows or even episodes of The Addams Family.

You can stream up to 12 items a month from Hoopla and 10 from Kanopy. There’s also no late fees because the videos automatically return after 72 hours.

You can use either service on your computer, smart TV, tablet or smartphone. Both the Hoopla and Kanopy apps are available for free at the Google Play and iTunes stores.

Unlimited streaming of the Great Courses for free on Kanopy

Have you heard of The Great Courses?

They’re a collection of phenomenal lectures series created by esteemed college professors for the general public on fascinating topics like Decisive Battles in World History, Writing Great Fiction, and Physics & our Universe.

They’re engaging, enlightening, and understandable.

The only downside? They can be a touch expensive to buy.

But that’s no longer a problem since Kanopy allows you to stream them for free! If you’re not familiar with Kanopy, it’s a streaming service that lets you watch some of the world’s greatest films and documentaries. And it’s free with your library card!

Typically, you can stream 10 items from Kanopy each month. But, right now, you can stream unlimited Great Courses videos from Kanopy with your Mentor Public Library card.

Learn as much as you want to about history, skills, hobbies, humanities and science.

By the way, if you prefer streaming audio, you can stream more than 100 Great Courses in their entirety as audiobooks using Hoopla. Once again, Hoopla is free to use with your Mentor Public Library card. You can borrow up to 12 items per month from its collection.

Streaming video on OverDrive?!

FB graphic 404x404_Streaming VideoYou probably already know that you can borrow ebooks and audiobooks from OverDrive with your library card. (More than ever, now that we’ve joined CLEVNET.)

But did you know that you can use OverDrive to stream workout videos, documentaries, and even cartoons to your smart devices?

Now anyone with a MPL card can stream videos via OverDrive to their smartphones, tablets and computers.

If you browse OverDrive’s video collection, you’ll find everything National Geographic documentaries to cooking videos to Sesame StreetYou have nearly 5,000 titles to watch.

You can “check out” as many as 20 videos at a time and stream them at their convenience for the next three days. All videos will automatically expire at the end of the lending period so there are no late fees.

By the way, you can also stream thousands of videos on Hoopla and Kanopy.

And we’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: All of these digital services and more are available without additional cost. All you need is your Mentor Public Library card.

Enjoy a masterpiece with our Classic Film Club

Maltese FalconYou deserve a masterpiece. So come enjoy one of the best films ever made when our Classic Film Club meets at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, at our Main Branch.

This month, we’re watching The Maltese Falconstarring Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor.

Enjoy the film (and the air conditioning), followed by a short discussion. We even provide the popcorn. Everyone is welcome and no registration is required.
