Host your own Halloween film festival with Hoopla & Kanopy
Do you like scary movies?
You can host your own Halloween film festival with Hoopla, Kanopy and your library card. (If you’re not familiar with Hoopla and Kanopy, they’re both streaming services that you can use with your Mentor Public Library card. Think of them as Netflix — but free.)
Here are some of our favorite frightening films — any of which you can borrow and start streaming now:
Both Hoopla and Kanopy offer their share of horror classics, including:
- Bride of Frankenstein
- Werewolf of London
- Creature from the Black Lagoon
- Suspiria
- Night of the Living Dead
- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
- Nosferatu
- Black Sunday
- Agatha Christie’s Endless Night
- Black Sabbath
- House on Haunted Hill
- The Little Shop of Horrors
- Invasion of the Body Snatchers
They also have modern screamers like:
- Under the Skin
- Scream
- Children of the Corn
- A Girl Walks Home Alone at Midnight
- Zodiac
- My Friend Dahmer
- Donnie Darko
- The Night Eats the World
- Stephen King’s A Good Marriage
- the anthology Fun Size Horror
- They Remain
- The Love Witch
- Extraordinary Tales, an animated retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s greatest stories
If you’re looking for something funny but still Halloween-appropriate, you’ll enjoy What We Do in the Shadows or even episodes of The Addams Family.
You can stream up to 12 items a month from Hoopla and 10 from Kanopy. There’s also no late fees because the videos automatically return after 72 hours.
You can use either service on your computer, smart TV, tablet or smartphone. Both the Hoopla and Kanopy apps are available for free at the Google Play and iTunes stores.
All you need to get started is a Mentor Public Library card. Click here if you want step-by-step instructions on how to use Hoopla or Kanopy. Or, if you prefer, you can always call or visit us.
