Does your kid like making art? Are they running out of things to draw, sketch, and paint on at home? Bring them to the library!

And if your kid doesn’t like making art, bring them to the library anyhow. They’ll be surprised at how much fun they have at one of our many art programs.

Just last month we made Pop Art in the style of Roy Lichtenstein and used skittles to make rainbows that looked good enough to eat.

And your family can join in the fun! We host several other programs that art lovers of all ages can enjoy, including:

Making art at Mentor Public Library

Kids can make Pop Art in the style of Roy Lichtenstein when our Masterpieces at Main Art Club meets at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, at our Main Branch.

Each month, this art club tackles a different project. They’ve decorated sugar skulls for Dia de los Muertos, tried paint pouring, quilled paper, and made masterpieces like Mondrian.

The Masterpieces at Main Art Club is open to all kids from eight to 12 years old. And you don’t need to paint like Picasso or sculpt like Michelangelo to participate. However, to get the most out of the club, the kids will need to be able to work independently. Also, art can get messy, so dress appropriately. You can register to attend online or call us at (440) 255-8811 ext. 221.

By the way, we host several other programs that art lovers of all ages can enjoy, including:

  • Studio MPL, which is now at our Lake Branch! Each month, kids can learn about a different artist by making an art project in their style and then by following a scavenger hunt of their famous works through the building. Children can walk in anytime between 3 and 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, to participate.
  • Kids aren’t the only ones who can get creative. Adults can join us when our Bad Art Club meets at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, at our Headlands Branch. We’ve made everything from ugly Christmas sweaters to sharpie “tie-dye” shirts. All levels of experience are welcome, because making bad art is much better than making no art at all.
  • Finally, if you love art, then you should check our Book & Brush Club. Our Collection Development Manager Barb provides a visual presentation based on the lives of artists and associated art movements from the club’s book of the month. They’ll discuss The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman when they meet at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at our Main Branch.

Whaaaam! Studio MPL, our art club for kids, learned about pop artist Roy Lichtenstein this month.

They also tried some of his techniques, like drawing inspiration from comics.

Every month, the kids in Studio MPL take on a new art project. They’ve sketched live models, celebrated Day of the Deadcreated imaginary friendsmade sun catchersweavedtried out pointillism and even garnered inspiration from Jackson Pollock and Joan Miró.
