So many crafty programs for Earth and Arbor Day! Make collages, reusable totes and more.

So many crafty programs for Earth and Arbor Day! Make collages, reusable totes and more at Mentor Public Library’s branches.

We’re celebrating both Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 26) soon, so we’re hosting three programs that week where families can find the fun in going green.

First, families can make Earth Day collages any time from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 22, at our Headlands Branch. You can create landscapes, planets or anything else you can imagine out of recycled magazines. No registration required. All ages welcome.

Next, kids can make crafts out of recycled materials during our monthly Green Kids Craft Lab at 6 p.m. this Wednesday, April 24, at The HUB inside Mentor High School. This month’s theme is (naturally) I Love the Earth. Once again, no registration is required.

That same day, adults can make their own crafty, reusable totes at 6:30 p.m. at our Lake Branch. Like our other programs, this one is free to attend. However, we do require that you register beforehand. You can sign up online or call our Lake Branch at (440) 257-2512.

Additionally, if you’re looking for another way to recycle, you can come to the Friends of Mentor Public Library’s book sale that weekend. Restock your bookshelves for next to nothing on Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28.

The money from these book sales supports library programs and services, including summer reading, author visits, children’s story times and programs, as well as programming for teens.

Finally, if you’re looking books or DVDs to help discuss Earth or Arbor Day with your kids, we literally have hundreds in our collection that you can borrow.

Go medieval!

Kids can build their own catapults and launch marshmallows at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, at our Headlands Branch.

The young engineers can compete for the longest launch and best aim. The winner will receive a prize.

The program is free to attend and open to all kids from nine to 12 years old. However, we do ask that you register beforehand. You can sign up online or call us at (440) 257-2000.

By the way, we have several books on how to build catapults for both kids and adults, as well as other cool engineering projects you can make with your family. And they’re all free to borrow with your library card!

Pups popping up for Paws to Read

By |2019-02-23T06:00:15-05:00February 23, 2019|

Miss Marlee and other trained therapy dogs await your young reader at Paws to Read.

Miss Marlee and other trained therapy dogs await your young reader at Paws to Read.

The pups from our Paws to Read program will visit our Headlands Branch on Saturday, March 9. There will be two sessions: one beginning at 1:30 p.m., another at 2 p.m.

Paws to Read pairs young readers (between the ages of six and 12 years old) with adorable and well-trained therapy dogs, who listen to the kids as they read.

The dogs make an ideal audience—supportive and adorable—and all they ask for in return is the occasional belly rub. The program helps build the child’s confidence and makes reading fun for them.

If your child loves dogs but is shy about reading, then they (and you) will love our Paws to Read.

The program is popular and fills up quickly, so you’ll need to sign up beforehand. You can register your child to participate online or call the Headlands Branch at 440-257-2000.

Miss the birds?

They haven’t all disappeared for the winter. But it’s easier to find them when you offer them something to eat.

Kids (nine to 12 years old) can make bird-feeders at 2 p.m. this Saturday at our Headlands Branch. We’ll even give you treats to fill it with.

The program is free to attend. We only ask that you register beforehand. You can sign up online or call our Headlands Branch at (440) 257-2000.
