Mentor Library offers reading tutoring for kids this summer

By |2019-05-25T06:00:00-04:00May 25, 2019|

Don't let your kids' reading skills atrophy this summer.

Don’t let your kids’ reading skills atrophy this summer. Get reading help from a certified elementary school teacher this summer at Mentor Public Library’s Headlands Branch.

Summer is a lot of fun, but the summer slide is not.

The reading skills of children (especially younger ones) can atrophy if they don’t practice over the summer.

So to fight the dreaded summer slide, kids (those entering first through third grade) can practice reading with a certified elementary school teacher this summer at our Headlands Branch.

The children will have 20-minute, one-on-one tutoring sessions where they can practice their comprehension and sight words.

The sessions will be on Wednesdays from 2 to 3 p.m. and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m, starting May 29 and continuing throughout the summer.

These tutoring sessions are free. Furthermore, a child need not live in Mentor or even have a Mentor Public Library card to participate. Call the Headlands Branch at (440) 257-2000 to set up a session.

Want another fun way to fight the summer slide? Participate in our Summer Reading program. The more you read and the more library programs that you attend, the better odds you have of winning a prize!

Double the dogs for Paws to Read

By |2019-04-11T06:00:47-04:00April 11, 2019|

Miss Marlee and other trained therapy dogs await your young reader at Paws to Read.

Miss Marlee and other trained therapy dogs await your young reader at Paws to Read.

To our young readers/dog lovers, we have two rounds of Paws to Read coming up.

That’s right! We’re doubling up the pup!

First, we have a pair of sessions on Wednesday, April 17, at our Main Branch. The first begins at 6:30 p.m., the second at 7 p.m.

The pups from our Paws to Read program will visit our Headlands Branch on Saturday, May 4. There will be two sessions: one beginning at 1:30 p.m., another at 2 p.m.

Paws to Read pairs young readers (between the ages of six and 12 years old) with adorable and well-trained therapy dogs, who listen to the kids as they read.

The dogs make an ideal audience—supportive and adorable—and all they ask for in return is the occasional belly rub. The program helps build the child’s confidence and makes reading fun for them.

If your child loves dogs but is shy about reading, then they (and you) will love our Paws to Read.

The program is popular and fills up quickly, so you’ll need to sign up beforehand. You can register your child to participate online or call the Headlands Branch at 440-257-2000.
