Oanh Loi-Powell and Mike Powell wanted to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Cleveland Asian Festival. As library lovers and lifelong learners, they decide to create a Little Free Library for the AsiaTown neighborhood where the festival occurs.

If you don’t know, a Little Free Library is essentially a community book exchange. People can pick up a book up a book or two for free, and old books can found new readers instead of being thrown out. (Mentor Public Library helps stock more than a dozen Little Free Libraries in Lake County.)

received_656753514785416Even though their Little Free Library now resides in Cleveland, the Powells used The HUB’s makerspace inside Mentor High School – the same makerspace that you can use with your CLEVNET card – to help create it.

Specifically, Oanh used The HUB’s vinyl cutter to make the stickers that adorn it. The lanterns, cherry blossoms, even the “Take a Book, Leave a Book” text – all made in The HUB.

The HUB’s makerspace has a green-screen studio (complete with camera and editing equipment,) laser engraver, vinyl cutter, T-shirt press, large format printer, spiral binder, button maker, 3D pens, sticker printer, and mini-laminator.

People can use any or all of these machines to make the project of their dreams. You don’t need to be a student at Mentor High School or even a resident of Mentor. All you need is a CLEVNET card in good standing. Click here for more details or to make a reservation.

And there’s never been a better opportunity to use the makerspace’s equipment. This summer. we’ve expanded The HUB’s hours to noon to 8 p.m. on Monday through Thursday.

So what will you make?
