Use transfers and fabric paint to customize your own shirt at the library.

We’re commemorating our 200th anniversary in 2019 and offering ways to celebrate all year long.

Adults can make themselves a gift – a library-themed T-shirt – during a special program at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, at our Lake Branch.

You can get creative and use different mixed-media methods to customize your shirt, including acetone-based transfers and fabric paint and markers.

This mixed-media extravaganza is free to attend and open to all adults. However, we do require that you register beforehand. You can sign up online or call the Lake Branch at (440) 257-2512.

By the way, if you’re interested in customizing your own shirts but can’t come to the program, you can always use the vinyl cutter and heat press at The HUB’s makerspace.

Give to MedWish International this February

By |2019-01-24T06:00:48-05:00January 24, 2019|

Donate your

Save lives and the environment by donating your unneeded medical equipment to MedWish International this February at Mentor Public Library.

As part of our 200th anniversary celebration, we’re collecting supplies for a different locally based nonprofit each month this year.

In January, we’re collecting food and household supplies for McKinley Community Outreach Center.

Next, our Year of Giving continues with MedWish International in February. MedWish saves lives and the environment by collecting discarded medical equipment and supplies that can be used again.

In 2017 alone, MedWish sent out 140 shipments of lifesaving equipment to places that needed it.

And you can help too. MedWish collects all sorts of supplies — some of which you may have around your house — things like:

  • bandages
  • syringes
  • crutches
  • gauze
  • diapers and powdered infant formula
  • thermometers
  • surgical masks
  • catheters.

Here’s a complete list of supplies, equipment and furniture that MedWish collects. We’ll be accepting donations at our Main, Lake and Headlands Branches throughout February.

However, if you have something bigger that you wish to give — like wheelchairs, IV poles or furniture — then you might want to contact MedWish directly. Its phone number is 216-692-1685. You can also email info@medwish.org.

Our Year of Giving continues all year. The calendar is:

July – Project Hope
October – Forbes House
November – Broadmoor/Deepwood

Thank you for giving if you can! And check here for more ways you can enjoy 200 years of Mentor Public Library.

Kids can put it all together during our puzzling party on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

We’re hosting a program that’s one part puzzle, one part party, and all fun.

Kids from first through sixth grade are welcome to our puzzling party at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Main Branch.

The kids will piece together a puzzle of the library. Once the puzzle is completed, we will put it on display so everyone can admire their masterpiece.

The program is free to attend. We only ask that kids register ahead of time. You can sign them up online or call us at (440) 255-8811 ext. 221.

The puzzle party is part of our 200th anniversary celebration this year. You can celebrate with us all year long.

One way to join the party: We’ve compiled a list of 200 books for our big anniversary: everything from Walt Whitman to Margaret Atwood, Judy Blume to Goosebumps.

Anyone can read along with the list. The more books you read, the bigger prizes you’ll win.

If you read:

  • 10 books, you receive a MPL microfiber cloth.
  • 25 books, you earn two free books from the Friends of the Mentor Public Library.
  • 50 books, you receive MPL lip balm. (Yes, that’s a thing.)
  • 75 book, you get a MPL Pint Glass.
  • an astonishing 100 books, you win a gorgeous MPL blanket.

But reading is its own reward, and you don’t need to read a book a day to make it worth your while. Peruse our list, pick a few favorites, and start reading!

We’re also hosting a year’s worth of donation drives for local nonprofits, amnesty days and special programs to celebrate our 200th anniversary. For more info, visit www.mentorpl.org/200th.
