Mentor Library hosting puppet show on holiday

Families can enjoy their kids’ day off from school with a free puppet show at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, at our Main Branch!

The Great Lakes National Puppet Theater will perform the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The show is appropriate for kids of all ages. Kids can ask the puppeteers questions and even have their photo taken with the puppets after the performance!

Expert Advice on Children’s Literacy

Families can receive expert advice from experienced educators during a free program about early literacy for young children at noon on Thursday, Jan. 23, at our Main Branch.

The Educational Service Center of the Western Reserve will:

  • share research about reading
  • look at the important role a child’s home life can have in their learning how to read
  • share and discuss clips from the documentary The Right to Read.

This program is open to parents and other family members of children who are starting their reading journey, as well as caregivers and anyone who wants to support early literacy.

This session is the first in a series from the Education Service Center of the Western Reserve. It’s designed to strengthen the partnership between schools and families. Each session provides valuable tools and strategies to support student success.

The topic for the second session is bullying, and it will be 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, at our Main Branch.

The third session will discuss chronic absenteeism at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb 20, at our Main Branch.

Library offers guide to streaming services & cutting cable

Learn how you can save money – while still getting the entertainment you want – when you cut cable during a free program at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, at out Lake Branch.

There are several streaming services out there: Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Apple+, Paramount+, Amazon Prime, Max, Peacock, and more. Our librarian will help everyone find what services are worth the money.

She’ll also talk about the streaming services that are free to use with a Mentor Public Library card like Hoopla and Kanopy. Learn how to stream movies, TV shows, documentaries and more to your preferred device. The program is free to attend and registration is required. Ingredient Deep Dive: Olive Oil

Take a deep dive into olive oil without greasing your hair during an informative presentation at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at our Main Branch.

MPL librarian and former chef Stefanie Paganini will share how olives are turned into olive oil. She’ll also discuss the variations and grades of olive oil. Finally, she’ll guide patrons through a tasting of various olive oils.

Explore the Sinking of the Bismarck

Dr. John Foster will explore one of World War II’s most famous and crucial episodes – the sinking of The Bismarck – during a free lecture at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, at our Main Branch.

Foster will explain both the danger The Bismarck presented and the deadly game of cat-and-mouse that preceded its sinking.

In addition to being a reference librarian, Foster has a doctorate degree in history. He has taught history at both high school and college levels. Previously, he has led series on the Battles of World War II, the American Revolution, Cold War, and US Presidents of the 20th Century at the library.
